CHILUNDU WEAR BACK ON MARKETS
African tradional wear chilundu has evolved back on Malawian markets after years of not being seen on the market.
Chilundu, a piece of cloth woven from a fabric worn from the waist downwards, together with a blouse and duku.
Known by its local name “Kale kanga” chilundu comes in different forms from overlap skirts, short sleeved blouses and dresses for women and short or long sleeved shirts for men.
However, as fashion naturally elvoves the fashion industry continues to change in a way that everyone adapts. Chilundu is becoming a must have attire across the country. Even males appreciate this wear by wearing shirts that match the womans attire.
Cecilia Bamusi of Ciar Designs and Tailoring in an interview yesterday said that clothes display and shape identity. The communal and cultural ethics of people with time through out the world as well as Malawi so does fashion change through out the ages.
She added that it is not a thing of suprise that Chilundu a long time fashion has evolved back as fashion repeats itself just like history. This comes about from both internal and external influences.
Chatting with a few random people, it is discovered that people are now embracing chllundu because it reminds them of the old age culture and shows uniformity in occasions like traditional weddings.
